The emergence of the Helgate trading settlement (“Gates of Hell”) is associated with the construction in 1866 of the Mullen Road , the first wagon tract that crossed the Rocky Mountains . In 1877, Fort Mizula was founded, which has survived to this day.
In 1883, the North Pacific Railway was laid through Mizula. The city is becoming an important railway junction. In 1893, the University of Montana opened its doors. On the ranch near Mizula, Janet Rankin was born - the first woman in the US Congress [4] .
The most famous Mizula native, director David Lynch , portrayed logging towns similar to his hometown in the movie Blue Velvet and the television series Twin Peaks . In 1990, he responded to a request to state his biography with three words: “ Eagle Scout , Mizula, Montana” [5] .
