Giles, Herbert

Herbert Allen Giles ( eng. Herbert Allen Giles , December 8, 1845 - February 13, 1935 ) - British diplomat and sinologist . He improved the system of Romanization of the Chinese language ( putonghua ), developed by Thomas Wade and known as the Wade-Giles Transcription System . Among his main works are translations of Confucius , Lao Tzu , Chuang Tzu , as well as the publication of the first complete Sino-English dictionary. [6] [7]

Biography

Herbert A. Giles was the third son in the family of an Anglican priest. After studying at school, Charterhouse entered the diplomatic service in China (1867–1892). He spent several years (from 1885 to 1888) at Fort Santo Domingo in Tamsui ( Taiwan ). In 1897, Cambridge University awarded him the title of Professor of Chinese, so, following Thomas Wade, Giles became the second British specialist in this field. [eight]

In 1897, Giles received an award from the French Academy for the Chinese Biographical Dictionary . The third edition of Strange Stories (1916) he dedicated to his seven grandchildren. He was an ardent agnostic and a zealous freemason . Despite the title of professor, Giles did not become a member of the board of any university colleges. He retired in 1932. He died in the ninetieth year of life.

Father - John Allen Giles (1808–1884). Children: sons Bertram, Valentine, Lancelot, Lionel and daughters Edith and Mabel Giles.
