This object is one of those listed in the original edition of the New General Catalog .
Apparently, the galaxy was discovered in 1781 by the French astronomer Pierre Meshen . However, a gross error in the measurement of coordinates did not allow further confirmation of the discovery. In 1788, it was independently discovered by the English astronomer William Herschel .
The galaxy is observed almost from the edge, which allows you to see the dark areas of cosmic dust located in the galactic plane.
Vereteno Galaxy is approximately 44 million light-years distant. Light takes about 60 thousand years to cross the entire galaxy.
