History
In the Celtic era, Soason was known as the main city of the Swordson tribe and was called Noviodunum , or Augusta Sessionom . According to legend, the Crispinian and Crispin brothers were engaged in shoemaking in Roman Soison , who persecuted Christians in 287 and were martyred and later recognized as saints. At the initiative of the Roman emperor Majorian in 451, the city became the center of the administratively reorganized northern Gaul, known as Soissonsky region .
In 464 - 486 years under the leadership of Syagria, the city and region turned into the last outpost of the Gallo-Roman statehood in the struggle against the German invaders. In 486, the German leader Chlodwig defeated the Roman commander Siagria here. In 511, Soason became the main city of Neustria . Around 557, Hlotar I founded the abbey of St. Medard here , which later became an important spiritual and political center. In 752, the abbey was anointed for the kingdom of Pepin the Short [4] .
From the 9th century , it was the main town of the county of Soissons , which passed by purchase and inheritance into many sovereign surnames, until the French crown in 1734 got it. In 1729, the Soissons Congress sat in the city and settled the differences between the Spaniards and the British .
During the war of 1814, Soason changed hands several times: on February 14 he was taken by General Chernyshev , but the Russians left after that, and after 5 days the fortress was again occupied by Marshal Mortier . On March 2, Soason, where the garrison of the Polish troops (1600 men) was left under the command of General Moreau, was surrounded and bombarded by the troops of Blucher and Bülow . The next day, the fortress surrendered. (For more on these events, see The Taking of Soissons (1814) .)
Following the retreat of Blucher for Enu, the Russian corps of General Rudzewich remained in Suasone. On March 5, he was attacked by the troops of Marshals Mortier and Marmont , who, despite the double superiority of forces, could not capture the fortress. On March 7, Rudziewicz was ordered to clear Suason, to join the army located at Lahn .
In September 1870 , during the Franco-German war , Soison was besieged by the troops of the 13th German corps and surrendered on the 36th day of the siege.
