Biography

Born February 12, 1818 in St. Petersburg in the family of a mountain official. At first he was a volunteer at the Imperial Academy of Arts , and in 1835 he became an official academician. His teacher in landscape painting was M.N. Vorobyov . In addition to landscapes, Sternberg was engaged in household painting - from the moment he entered the academy, he created drawings and caricatures, which surprised his comrades and teachers. He spent his summer vacations at the Little Russian estate Kachanovka, patron of art G.S. Tarnovsky, who patronized him.

The result of these trips was a lot of pencil drawings, watercolors and paintings. In 1837 , the Academy awarded Sternberg with a small gold medal for these works, including for the watercolor “Fair in the town of Ichne” - the painting was purchased by Emperor Nicholas I for the wife’s album. In 1837, for the painting “Consecration of Easter in Little Russia” (also purchased by the emperor for the gift of his daughter, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna ), he received a large gold medal and the title of artist of the XIV class.

In 1840, he traveled to Orenburg during the expedition of Count Perovsky to Khiva , and then was sent to Italy as a pensioner of the academy. Having settled in Rome, he continued to work hard. Sternberg died in Rome on September 8, 1845 , having lived only 27 years.
