Hoazinavis lacustris

Hoazinavis lacustris (lat.) Is a fossil species of birds from the goatsin family (Opisthocomidae), found in Brazil . The age of the remains is estimated at 22-24 million years (Upper Oligocene and Lower Miocene ). The description was made by an international group of paleontologists consisting of Gerald Mayr ( Germany ), Herculano Alvarenga (Brazil) and Cécile Mourer-Chauviré ( France ) based on materials discovered in 2008 in the Tremembé formation near Sao Paulo [1] . The new fossil species Hoazinavis lacustris is considered as the oldest representative of the goacins. The previously found species of Hoazinoides magdalenae is less than 15 million years old: it comes from the Middle Miocene of Colombia [2] . Two more species close to goacins are known from the Eocene: Onychopteryx simpsoni (Argentina; Cracraft 1971) [3] and Foro panarium (North America; Olson, 1992) [4] [5] .
