History

The University of Chicago campus dates back to several private medical colleges founded at the end of the 19th century , including the Chicago College of Pharmacy ( 1859 ), the College of Physicians and Surgeons ( 1882 ) and the Columbia College of Dentistry ( 1891 ) [5] .

The University of Illinois was founded in 1867 in the merged cities of Champaign and Urbana . Chicago lawmakers also promised to open a "polytechnic" branch in Chicago [6] . The Chicago Medical Colleges, which existed separately, were associated with the university in 1896 - 1897 , and in 1913 became part of it, forming the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry and the College of Pharmacy. Medical education and research , which expanded significantly over the following decades, led to the formation of other medical colleges, which, together with existing ones, became known as the Chicago Professional Colleges of the University of Illinois . In 1935, the first bill of the newly elected State Representative, Richard Daley, introduced a resolution calling for the creation of the University of Chicago campus of Illinois [7] .

In 1945 , after the end of World War II, the Daily (then state senator) introduced four bills calling for the creation of a university in Chicago [7] . Soon a temporary campus for bachelors was created [8] [9] , known as “Harvard on the Rocks,” located on a pier near Lake Michigan . It was not a college graduate, but rather a two-year course, at the end of which the student could transfer to the Urbana-Champaign campus and graduate with a degree.

Classes began here in October 1946 , the number of students was about 4 thousand. Since at that time this campus was not a full-fledged public university, most of the first-generation students were from working families. Demand for university education remained high, and therefore the university decided to create a graduating campus.

In 1951, the Daily was able to get the support of the state senate in passing a bill calling for the creation of a university campus . In 1955, Daley became mayor of Chicago and demanded that the University of Illinois take an early decision on this issue [7] . By 1961, the long and controversial process of finding a suitable place for a campus was completed [10] . In the same year, the current College of Medical Sciences became the University of Illinois Medical Center (UIMC).

A new campus was opened in February 1965. [11] The designs for his buildings were developed by the architectural firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill , which created designs for most of Chicago's tallest skyscrapers [12] [13] . Unlike the campus on the pier, a full-fledged education with the issuance of diplomas began in the new "house" of the university.

In 1979, Stanley Aikenberry , president of the University of Illinois, announced plans to combine the two campuses to form the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). This process was completed in September 1982 [14] .
