Specifications
The Creation Engine was designed primarily for use in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , the fifth (2011) installment in the series of role-playing games The Elder Scrolls .
Previous games in the series, in particular, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion 2006 and several add-ons for it, as well as other games of the company (for example, Fallout 3 2008 ) worked using a licensed third-party engine Gamebryo . Morrowind of the same company ( 2002 ) runs on Gamebryo's predecessor, NetImmerse .
Creation Engine, created by Bethesda Game Studios, is based on the code of the Gamebryo engine , developed by Emergent Game Technologies and Numerical Design Limited [1] , which can be explained by the company's desire to use familiar, proven tools.
Since Skyrim is a role-playing game, involving a large game location , open for free movement, when developing the engine, the authors paid great attention to the ability to display territories with a large drawing distance. [2] The graphics engine was created so that objects were illuminated more believably than before, and the rendering of water was better. Given that the province of Skyrim, in which the action of the game of the same name takes place, has a northern location, the authors paid attention to a realistic study of snow . The system automatically, depending on the terrain, generates the right amount of snow for trees, stones and bushes. [3] [4] [5] [6]
Instead of SpeedTree - a third-party technology that was used in the previous game of the series to visualize trees , the authors of the engine created their own software solution. [3] [4]
For the artificial intelligence of the characters that are found in the game, the own system is responsible - Radiant AI , which was also used in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion . [7] For the new part, the authors significantly improved artificial intelligence, intending to create the illusion of the life of the citizens of Skyrim: they have breakfast, go to work, go to the pub , etc. The story management system, called Radiant Story , allows developers to mix manually created tasks with tasks that can be randomly generated from various conditions, in addition, tasks can appear in a different order and differ depending on the style of the game. [3] [4]
For character animation, third-party Havok Behavior technology is integrated. [3] [4]
On February 7 of the same year, developers also released the Creation Kit level editor , which allows users to create their own modifications for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim . The editor is available in a version only for a personal computer . [eight]
On June 3, 2015 , the developer of Bethesda Game Studios announced a new part of the Fallout role-playing series - Fallout 4 , which also uses the Creation Engine, but an updated version that uses the so-called. physically based rendering ( English physical-based rendering ) and dynamic volumetric lighting . [9] In addition, support for modifications (and the release of tools for them) was announced, which, when created on a PC, will be able to work in the game version for the Xbox One console. According to developer Todd Howard , Bethesda Game Studios is considering the possibility, through negotiations with Sony , of releasing tools for the PlayStation 4 as well.
Creation Kit 2.0 - a toolkit for modding - became available for Fallout 4 on April 27, 2016. [ten]
According to Todd Howard , in an interview with the German gaming magazine Gamestar, the upcoming Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI will also use the Creation Engine , but in a much more advanced form. [eleven]
