Description
Body length up to 90-100 cm and more. The ribbon-like body is very flattened from the sides, covered with very large scales. The dorsal and anal fins are very long and narrow, almost merging with the caudal fin. Together with a very wide and laterally compressed caudal stem, they form an effective βoarβ that gives the Aravan a powerful acceleration at the time of the attack on the prey and allows it to jump out of the water to a considerable height. In the dorsal fin 52β58 rays, in the anal 61β67 rays, in the lateral line 37β40 scales, vertebrae 96β100. The mouth is very wide, upper, at the end of the lower jaw two large mobile fleshy tendrils. Most of the time the black aravana slowly floats at the surface of the water, while the antennae are directed forward and the fish seem to feel the water with them.
Habitat and habitat
It lives in South America in the Rio Negro and Orinoco river basins in Brazil and Colombia . It inhabits shallow backwaters and coastal zones of rivers with a water temperature of + 24 ... + 30 Β° C. During the annual river spills, black aravana swims into the flooded floodplain forests. Pelagic fish. Able to live in low oxygen waters.
Nutrition
It hunts mainly at the surface of the water. It feeds on small fish and insects. Catches flying insects, jumping out of the water.
Reproduction
The female spawns 50-250 eggs per year. The male incubates caviar in the mouth. The incubation period lasts 6-8 weeks. He also hatches the hatched larvae in his mouth until the yolk sac dissolves in them and they switch to external nutrition. The baby emerges from the mouth with a size of 8 cm.
Aquarium Content
A popular aquarium fish. In aquariums, black aravana is kept at a water temperature of +28 Β° C, pH = 6.5β6.8, and water hardness dH up to 10 Β° F.
