In Sweden, Björn is nicknamed “Walle”. He made his rally debut in 1962 on a 1200 Volkswagen, and won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1969 and 1970 on the Porsche 911. He participated in the World Rally Championship from 1972 (the year the championship was created) to 1992. At WRC, he won 16 stages.
Career
Björn’s career spans four decades, he debuted in 1962 and, after winning the Swedish rally championship in 1967 and the 68th, begins to perform at the highest level until 1992. Only a severe fracture in his hand on the 1992 Safari Rally forced him to end his career. His first international victory, at the wheel of a Porsche 911, was won at the Monte Carlo Rally 1968, the last at the Toyota Rally at the 1990 Safari Rally. This victory brought him the title of the oldest age winner of the World Cup, which he has saved to this day.
In the mid-1970s, Waldegord took part in the European Championship in the Rally Cross class at the Porsche Carrera RSR. The best result was second place after Franz Wurz, father of Alexander Wurz in 1974. He started his career in the World Rally Championship at the wheel of Lancia , which he left after a scandal caused by the fact that he was assigned the second pilot's place in the team. After joining the Ford team at the wheel, Ford Escort RS won three of the world's most challenging rallies in 1977: the Safari Rally (Kenya), the Acropolis Rally (Greece) and the UK Rally (Ireland). In 1979, he won the World Rally Championship by defeating Hannah Mikkola in the final round of the Ivory Coast Rally. In September 2008, Bjorn Valdegord took part in the Colin MacRae Rally, a race in memory of Colin MacRae who died in 2007. In this race, he spoke at the Porsche 911.
