Geography

The lake is located 44 km south of the city of Jasper. It is the largest lake of the Jasper National Park, as well as the largest natural lake of the Canadian Rockies [2] . The lake is 22.5 km long and 1.5 km wide. The area of the lake is 19.71 km². Altitude - 1670 meters. The average depth is 35 meters, the maximum depth in the southern part of the lake is 97 meters. The lake receives food from the river of the same name, the drain is also along this river.

Geology

The valley in which the lake lies is U-shaped and formed due to the combined work of wind and water, but more so thanks to the work of glaciers for a long period. The lake itself was dammed by a moraine left by a glacier flowing into the valley towards the Athabasca River.

The highest peak in the area of Lake Malayn is Mount Brazo (3470 meters), which is located southeast of the lake, being the top of the eponymous glacier. Mount Brazo is located behind the high mountain range Monkhead (3211 meters) and is hardly visible from the lake. All the highest mountains are located at the southern end of the lake and are composed of rocks that formed in the Cambrian , Ordovician and Devonian periods from 600 to 350 million years ago.

To the north of the high peaks at the southern end of the lake, the opposite shores are different in both the form and the composition of the rocks composing them. On the east side of the valley is the Colin Ridge, which is part of the Queen Elizabeth Ranges. The sawtooth ridge is composed of limestone rocks of the Devonian period. On the western side of the valley is the Malayne Range, composed of Cambrian and Precambrian quartzites and shales . This ridge owes its smooth forms to glaciers moving above it [3] .

Fauna

The fauna around this alpine lake is surprisingly rich and diverse. Of the large mammals, grizzlies , wolves , coyotes , deer, moose , mountain goats and caribou live here. Representatives of the bird kingdom are bald eagles , golden eagles , ospreys , partridges and crows .

Pike , lake whitefish , lake and rainbow trout are found in the waters of the lake.

Title

The river owes its name to Pierre-Jean de Smet (Pierre-Jean De Smet (1801–1873)), in French its name means evil or evil and was given to the river for its violent, indomitable temper in spring, later the name spread to the lake . The name Maline also bears the valley in which the lake lies, one of the mountain peaks towering above it, and a pass in the mountains.
