History

Indianapolis Star was founded on June 6, 1903 by George McCullough, an industrialist from Mansi (Munice, a town northeast of Indianapolis). At that time, the two main newspapers of Indianapolis were the Indianapolis Journal and Indianapolis Sentinel . Already a year and two days after the founding, McCullough bought the Journal , and in 1906 Sentinel . In 1904, the newspaper was bought by Daniel Reid and hired John Shaffer as a publisher, but later fired him. In the ensuing trial, Schaffer became the owner of a controlling stake in the newspaper in 1911 and worked as a publisher and editor until his death in 1943 [2] .

On April 25, 1944, the newspaper was bought by Eugene Palliam , who carried out a number of reforms to increase circulation [2] . In 1948, the Indianapolis Star became the largest newspaper in Indiana . In 2000, the Gannett Company bought a newspaper [3] [4] .

Pulitzer Prize

Indianapolis Star twice won the Pulitzer Prize for its journalistic investigations. In 1975, the newspaper received a prize for an investigation in 1974 related to corruption in the Indianapolis Police Department. In 1991, for the investigation of the criminal negligence of doctors [5] .
