Geography
The city of Villefranche-sur-Saone is located in the east of France, in the Beaujolais region, being its traditional center, 25 kilometers north of Lyon . Administratively, the city is located in the Rhone department of the Rhone-Alpes region . Villefranche-sur-Saône is the administrative center of the district of the same name ( Villefranche-sur-Saône ) and canton. The urban population is 35,246 people (for 2013).
Attractions
Among the city attractions, in addition to the local excellent wine of the Beaujolais brand, it is worth noting the preserved ancient city center around the Marais Square and the Notre Dame Cathedral built in the XIII-XVI centuries.
Interesting Facts
In Villefranche-sur-Saone, the famous stained glass window “Chess Players” was made - one of the few surviving stained glass windows of the 15th century for a secular plot. Made in France around 1450. It is stored in the collection of the Cluny Museum.
