Since the older brother of Thibault, Robert, died during the life of his father, after the death of Count Ed I de Blois in 995 or 996, he inherited Thibault. However, since he was still a minor at that time, his vast possessions, which included the counties of Blois , Chartres , Chateaudon , Tours , Beauvais , Reims and Dreux , were for some time under the control of Robert II the Pious King of France , who married his mother Thibo. King Robert succeeded in protecting the stepson's possessions from the claims of Count Anjou Fulk III of Nerra .
After Thibault became an adult, he assumed control of his lands. Little is known about his rule. In 1004, Thibault planned to take a trip to Rome to get the pope to confirm his adherent Menard, the abbot of the monastery of Saint-Per-de-Chartres , but died on the way. Thibault's body was buried in the abbey of Saint-Per-de-Chartres. Since Thibault was not married and did not leave children, his younger brother Ed II succeeded him.
