First mentioned in the Saxon charter of 969 as Wyttannige , in the Book of the Last Judgment of 1086 recorded as Witenie . The name means " Witta Island".
The city was known from the Middle Ages as a center for the production of woolen blankets until the closure of the last factories at the beginning of the 21st century.
The rail service opened in 1861 and closed in 1970.
The city has three museums, a number of architectural monuments, including the Norman parish church of the Virgin Mary and the 16th century merkat-cross .

There are three museums in Whitney. Museum Cogges Manor Farm , located in the farmhouse of the 13th century, which aims to convey information about farm life. The museum Witney and District Museum contains artifacts and documents relating to the history of the city. The Wychwood Brewery Museum is an old-fashioned brewery.
