Grigory Nikolayevich spent the entire First World War in the trenches of the Southwestern Front. Only in 1915, "for the distinctions shown in battles against the enemy," he was awarded the Order of St. Stanislav of the 2nd degree, the Order of St. Anna of the 2nd and 3rd degrees and the Order of St. Vladimir of the 4th degree.

May 1916 The beginning of the legendary Brusilovsky offensive ( Brusilovsky breakthrough ). The most significant military operation of the Russian army of the First World War, when the troops of the Southwestern Front, led by Adjutant General A. A. Brusilov, broke through the positional defense of the Austro-Hungarian troops and occupied a significant territory of Western Ukraine. The Bashkadiklar 185th Infantry Regiment as part of the 47th Infantry Division these days was part of the 16th Army Corps of the 7th Army of the Southwestern Front.

“In the morning of May 27, the 16th army corps went on the offensive ... Having broken through the first defensive line of the Austrians, the corps organizes the persecution and by the end of May 28 leaves its right flank to the second defensive line along the Strypa River .” These are dry reports of combat reports. And the continuation is an extract from the order of the commander of the 7th Army D. G. Shcherbachev:

“By order of the commander of the 7th Army of July 21 this year No. 863, Lieutenant Colonel G. N. Bogatyrev was awarded the Order of St. George of the 4th degree for the fact that on May 31, 1916, commanding the 1st battalion of the 185th Bashkadiklar Infantry Regiment, despite strong resistance from the Austrians, he captured the village of Bobulinets and turned north , took possession of a height of 365, leaving this behind the enemy, staying on a site along the Strypa River south of the village of Kuidanov. Occupying a height of 365, facilitated the crossing of the Strypa River to the rest of the regiment and contributed to the decisive defeat of the Austrians. At the same time captured about 1,500 prisoners and 10 machine guns. ”

On the same day, Lieutenant Colonel Bogatyrev was shell-shocked by the rupture of a heavy shell and for two months he left the ranks of combat units.

It is noteworthy that even Austrian generals wrote in their reports that “the breakthrough on the lower Strypa became epidemic ...”, justifying their retreat by the loss of communication between units and “shock among the troops”.

According to historians, "the Brusilov offensive marked the beginning of a general turning point in the course of the First World War in favor of the Entente."

On April 20, 1917, by order of the Army and Navy, Colonel Bogatyrev was approved as commander of the 185th Bashkadiklar Infantry Regiment.

After the October Revolution, Grigory Nikolaevich was elected at the general meeting of the regiment as its commander. And he commanded this glorious military unit until its disbandment in the early summer of 1918.

In the ranks of the Red Army, Grigory Nikolayevich served as a teacher in the courses of the red commanders of the Caucasus Front. He received personal gratitude from the front commander K. Ye. Voroshilov "for the energy shown for the education and combat training of cadets."

After Demobilization

In 1922 he was discharged by age and health. The concussion made itself felt. He worked in his native Saratov in various business positions in the Office of the Ryazan-Ural Railway.
