Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi is a sacred ficus in Anuradhapura , Sri Lanka . Grown from the appendix of the Bodhi Tree , under which Prince Gautama attained enlightenment and became a Buddha . The tree was planted in 288 BC. e. and is one of the oldest trees and the oldest living tree planted by man.
The tree grows on the terrace, rising 6.5 m above the ground. For the Buddhists of Sri Lanka and the whole world, it is one of the main shrines. During the time of King Kirti Sri Rajasinghi (1747-1782), a fence was installed around the tree to protect it from wild elephants .
