Historical background
Papua New Guinea until 1975 was controlled by Australia . In 1975 it gained independence and at the same time the Navy was formed. Australia handed over 5 Attack patrol boats, 2 MDK and 3 aux. ship and boat. Already in the 1980s. 4 new patrol boats were built in Australia, and auxiliary ships were purchased in Singapore. In 1997, they made the last purchase of patrol boats in Singapore, after which the ship’s composition has not changed for 11 years.
Current status
To date, 200 people are serving in the Navy. Armed with 4 patrol boats and 2 landing ships. All boats and ships of the old construction of the 1970s and 80s, morally and physically obsolete. According to Jane's guide , the fleet is poorly funded and most of its equipment needs major repairs. It is believed that in this condition, the fleet cannot effectively perform its functions. As a rule, only one patrol boat can immediately go to sea, and the operation of landing craft is so costly that they are practically not used. In addition, the life of these ships is coming to an end. The fleet’s main concern is the fight against the illegal fishing of tuna by Japanese vessels.

Future
The navy command plans to replace the existing vessels with larger multi-purpose corvettes, and is also exploring the possibility of purchasing a 2,000-ton multi-purpose vessel, or converting a merchant vessel for patrolling. But for now, insufficient funding is hindering this.
