After independence from 1975 to 1976, he was Secretary General of the Office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Comoros. During the reign of President Ahmed Abdullah, he served as Minister of Finance from 1978 to 1982, and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1982 to 1990. He left his post shortly after the 1989 coup in which Abdullah was killed.
