Maputo (formerly known as Gulf of Delagoa [1] , Lorenzo Marques Bay [2] ; port. Baía de Maputo , Baía da Lagoa ) is a bay [3] [4] [5] , one of the best harbors in the Indian Ocean . Located in the south of the Strait of Mozambique , off the coast of Mozambique .

The length of the bay is about 112 km, width - from 25 to 40 km, depth - from 10 to 16 m. The shores are low-lying, marshy, covered with forest. The mouths of the flowing rivers (for example, Limpopo ) are flooded and form bays. The magnitude of the tide is from 1.8 to 5 m. Fishing ( shrimp fishing) is developed. The main port is Maputo .
