The Lyconian Plain , or Konya Plateau , is the southern, driest and most deserted part of the Anatolian Plateau in Turkey .
The plain gently slopes from the Taurus Mountains to Lake Tuz . The prevailing heights are 900–1000 m, individual ridges rise by 2000–3000 m. The plain is composed mainly of gypsum-bearing lake sediments . The landscape is dominated by dry steppes and semi-deserts ; many salt marshes and salt lakes. Reed thickets grow along rivers and lakes.
Currently, the plain is poorly populated. Favorable conditions for agriculture are created closer to the mountains. In ancient times, the Lycaon province of the Roman Empire was located here. On the plain is the city of Konya , which under the Seljuks was the capital of the Ottoman Empire .
