Biography

Jean Danielou was born into a family of Charles and Madeleine Danielo (nee Clamorgan). Charles was a deputy and minister under the Third Republic. Madeleine studied literature and philosophy, was actively involved in the development of education, and founded several educational institutions for women (San Marie College). Madeline herself graduated in 1903. As Daniela himself noted, his mother had a great influence on his spiritual and intellectual education. [2] Jean's younger brother, Alain (1907-1994), was a famous Indologist . Another brother, Louis, died in 1942 in Gibraltar. Jean Catherine's sister married his close friend Georges Isar.

Danielou studied French at the Sorbonne , where in 1927 he received a degree in grammar. At the Sorbonne, Jean meets J.-P. Sartre, J. Maritain and F. Moriak (the latter had a special influence on him). In the same period, he translated the French libretto by J. Cocteau for the opera "Oedipus Rex" by Igor Stravinsky into Latin. At the end of the Sorbonne, Jean performs military service at Fort Saint-Cyr (1927-1929)

On November 20, 1929, Danielou became a novice in the Jesuit order in Laval. On November 21, 1931, they made vows. This was followed by the traditional philosophy course at Zersei (1931-1934), after which Daniel was taught at Saint-Joseph College in Poitiers (1934-1936). In 1936-1939 Danielou, under the leadership of Henri de Lubac , studied theology (particularly patristics ) in Lyon Fourviere . Here he meets the young theologian Hans Urs von Balthazar. On August 24, 1938, Daniel was ordained a priest. [3]

In the years 1939-1940, during the Second World War , Daniel served in the French Air Force . Then he was demobilized and returned to civilian life. In 1941, he was sent to Paris. In 1943, Daniel defended his doctoral dissertation on St. Gregory of Nyssa, at the Paris Catholic Institute and in the same year becomes editor of the journal "Study" ("Studies"). after which he got a job as chaplain at the Sevres Women's Higher Normal School . During this period, he began to write his own works on patristics. He was one of the founders of Sources chrétiennes created to publish the writings of the Church Fathers . The first volume of the series published the work of St. Gregory of Nyssa's “The Life of Moses”, translated by Daniel, which he completed for his second doctoral dissertation at the Sorbonne. In 1943, Danielou succeeded Jules Lebreton as professor of the history of early Christian literature and history at the theological faculty of the Paris Catholic Institute . In the same year, he became one of the founders of the group "St. Circle". John the Baptist ”, whose tasks included encouraging missionary calling. At the invitation of Pope John XXIII , Daniel played the role of an expert at the Second Vatican Council (1962). Together with Karl Raner and Henri de Lubac, he joined the theological commission. Danielo actively reflected the work of the Cathedral in the French press, especially in Figaro. On April 21, 1969, Pope Paul VI ordained him bishop, and on April 28, 1969 he was appointed cardinal [4] . On November 9, 1972, Danielou was elected a member of the French Academy, where he succeeded Cardinal Eugene Tisserand, who died a few months before.

Danielo died on May 20, 1974 in Paris. Death occurred as a result of a heart attack .
