Content
Story
The film takes place in Harlem . 110th Street is its unofficial border.
Two detectives are forced to work side by side in the police department of the 27th district of New York : one is an idealist, a young black lieutenant William Pope (Cotto), the other is Italian , racist, rude and unbalanced, but experienced captain Frank Matelli (Quinn) . They are looking for three black criminals who killed seven people: three black gangsters, two Italian, as well as two patrol policemen. During the armed robbery, $ 300,000 belonging to the Mafia controlling Harlem was stolen. Mafia gunman Nick Desalvio (Francoza) and two of his partners are also looking for robbers. Jim Harris ( Paul Benjamin ), the last of the surviving robbers, in the emotional denouement of the film makes his last choice.
In one of the many violent scenes, Desalvio finds the robber driver Henry J. Jackson ( Antonio Fargas ) in a Harlem brothel and brutally beats him.

Soundtrack
The title song of the film, performed by Bobby Womack , positively noted by critics, took the 19th line of Billboard magazine's "hot black hits" in 1973. Quentin Tarantino later used it in his 1997 film “ Jackie Brown, ” thus paying tribute to the black exploit genre. The song also sounds in the 2007 Ridley Scott film "Gangster" , as well as the musical accompaniment for the video game True Crime: New York City .
