Matches
Thanks to the decision of the FIVB to grant the right to host the World League final tournament to Moscow , the Russian team was not tasked to win first place in the preliminary group, which led to a negative result - 10 defeats in a row from the start of the season. In early June, due to a serious illness of Vyacheslav Platonov , his assistant Vyacheslav Zaitsev became the acting head coach of the team.
At home Final Six, Russian volleyball players took 4th place in the group, and then in the match for bronze for the sixth time in the tournament, they met with the Netherlands team that played without their main binder Peter Blange and defeated her for the first time.
In August, upon the return of Vyacheslav Platonov, the Russian national team in Olsztyn successfully completed the qualifying tournament of the 1998 World Cup , and in preparation for the European Championship won four friendly matches in Ufa against the Japanese team.
Failures were pursued by Dmitry Fomin - on the eve of the “Final Six” of the World League, the captain and the main striker of the national team injured his right hand, and in August he again suffered a similar injury in one of the matches with the Japanese. Instead, in the starting six of the national team at the European Championships in the Netherlands, as well as at the Moscow World League final tournament, Alexey Kazakov played in an unusual role for himself. Having suffered unplanned defeats from Slovakia and Germany, Russian volleyball players could not reach the playoffs, which led to the resignation of head coach Vyacheslav Platonov.
