The surrounding area is the vast Goodwood Park, with the magnificent castle of the Duke of Richmond. In Roman time there was the city of Noviomag Regniev ( lat. Noviomagus Reginorum ) - a fortress, and then the capital of the Roman-British dependent kingdom Civitas Reginorum ( lat. Civitas Reginorum ). At the end of the 5th century, the fortress was destroyed by King Ella , then rebuilt by his son Tsissa and has since received the name Cissan ceaster ( Latin Cissae castrum ). Part of the ancient walls survived.
Chichester was a significant point in the first half of the 9th century . Under William the Conqueror became the residence of the bishop; was later the main city of Sussex county. From 1114 to 1336 a five-nave cathedral was built in the Gothic style , which is called the most typical medieval cathedral in England.
