They have the same name: the lighthouse located on the spit and the abandoned polygon of the American army , a part of the harbor covered by it from the sea leading to the fairway .

The northern tip is separated from the island of Long Island by Gateway Strait ( English Gateway ).

The natural fairway of Sandy Hook, leading to New York , runs approximately from east to west, near the tip of the spit. Prior to dredging, it had depths of up to 3½ fath (9.5 m). In the 1840s, a new, straight and wider fairway called the Ambrose Channel , with guaranteed depths of 44 feet (13.4 m), was made in the middle of the strait. Its beginning is equipped with a floating lighthouse . Current depths vary with tides (height 1.5 ÷ 1.8 m). There are both permanent and tidal currents in the strait. [one]

Currently, the territory of the spit is a park of national subordination. At the northern tip are the lighthouse, turned into a museum of Fort Hancock, a secondary school called the Marine Science and Technology Academy ( English Marine Academy of Science and Technology, MAST ), Marine Science Laboratory and the Coast Guard post.

The main type of economy is tourism . The ocean side of the spit has several equipped beaches, the inner side is mostly untouched.
