History

Abingdon is one of the oldest settlements in the UK. Its foundation dates back to about the 4th millennium BC. e., back to the time of the Iron Age in England. Abingdon also houses the second oldest monastery in England (after Glastonbury ), founded in 166 . In 1084, the English king William the Conqueror celebrated Easter holidays in this monastery, and his son, King Henry I , was brought up here.

In the Middle Ages, Abingdon was an important center for the sale of wool and fabrics. In the XIX century, the city fell into decay, since there were no railway lines. In 1929-1980, a British cars brand MG Cars was operating in Abingdon.

Until 1974, Abingdon was part of the county of Berkshire (now defunct).

Edmund Rich (archbishop of Canterbury and the Catholic saint) and Baron Charles Abbott (English politician of the 18th-19th centuries) were born in Abingdon.

Abingdon's main attraction is the Abingdon County Hall Museum in a 17th-century historic building. (opened in 1919).
