Biography
Sigeric was educated at Glastonbury Abbey, here he took tonsure . In the years 975–990, Sigeric was rector of the Abbey of St. Augustine . Since 985 - Bishop of Ramsbury . For his consecration to the rank of archbishop of Canterbury, Sigeric made a pilgrimage to Rome to receive his pallium personally from the hands of the pope. He described his return in a manuscript that has become the oldest guide for pilgrims and merchants along Via Francigena , stretching across all of Europe from Canterbury to Rome (except for a site across England from the English Channel to Canterbury). Driving 20 kilometers a day, Sigeric climbed this path in 80 stages - in Italy (via Latsium, Umbria, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Piedmont and Aosta), Switzerland (through the pass of St. Bernard, Vevey and Lausanne) and France (Besancon, Chalon-sur-Marne, Reims and Arras). Now the original of this work is stored in the British Library . Based on this document, the route for pilgrims along the early medieval Via Francigena is now precisely laid out - from station to station.
In the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Archbishop Sigerik is mentioned under the names Siric and Serio. It is also indicated that he was the first to speak out in 991 to offer a tribute of £ 10,000 for the sake of concluding peace to the Danish- Viking invaders in England under the command of King Sven I Viloborodogo .
Sigeric's successor at the Canterbury Chair was Archbishop Elfric .
