The Archdiocese of Antsiranana ( Latin: Archidioecesis Antsirananensis ) is the Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its center in Antsiranana , Madagascar . The metropolitanate of Antsiranana includes the dioceses of Ambandza , Mahajanga , and Port Berge .

History

On January 16, 1896, the Holy See established the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Madagascar, separating it from the Apostolic Vicariate of Madagascar (today, the Archdiocese of Antananarivo ).

On May 20, 1913, the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Madagascar was renamed the Apostolic Vicariate of Diego Suarez.

On March 15, 1923, the Apostolic Vicariate of Diego Suarez transferred part of his territory for the construction of the new Apostolic Vicariate of Mazzunga (today the Diocese of Mahajanga ).

On September 14, 1955, Pope Pius XII issued the bull Dum tantis , which transformed the Apostolic Vicariate of Diego Suarez into a diocese. On the same day, the Diocese of Diego Suarez entered the Metropolitanate of Tananarive.

On December 11, 1958, Pope John XXIII issued the bull Qui benignissima , which raised the diocese of Diego Suarez to the rank of archdiocese.

On May 21, 1959, the Archdiocese of Diego Suarez transferred part of its territory for the construction of a new diocese of Ambatundrazaki .

On October 28, 1989, the Archdiocese of Diego Suarez was renamed the Archdiocese of Antsiranana.

On October 30, 2000, the Archdiocese of Antsiranana transferred part of its territory for the construction of the new diocese of Fenuarivo-Atzinanana .
