The length from northwest to southeast is about 300 km, the maximum height is 564 m (within the Barlad plateau ). The hill is composed of limestones , sandstones and clays of the Neogene age. It consists of isolated ridges of hills with flat interfluves and steep slopes, deeply dissected by ravines and tributaries of the Prut , Siret and Barlad rivers.
The climate is temperate continental ; the amount of precipitation per year varies from 600-700 mm in the north to 400-500 mm in the south. Forest -steppe vegetation predominates. At the interfluve, forests were preserved: beech in the north, oak with an admixture of hornbeam in the south. A significant part of the hill is used in agriculture : fields for wheat and corn , orchards , vineyards .
