Biography
He took painting lessons at the Warsaw School of Drawing in the class of W. Gerson , then continued his studies, enrolling in 1889 at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg . After studying two semesters, he went for a year to the Academy of Arts in Munich .
Since 1891, he constantly lived and worked in Warsaw.
Stefan Popovsky was a member of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts. In 1926-1928 he served as vice-president of the Society, and in 1924-1931 - manager of the collection of the Society for the promotion, was a member of the jury of exhibitions. He was a member of the Warsaw Society of Arts and the Pro Arte group (from 1925) and the art group Mazowia (from 1928).
From 1889 to 1936, the artist exhibited his works in Warsaw, was repeatedly awarded (among others, won the second prize at the exhibition "Winter in Poland", 1925).
In addition, he was the initiator of the so-called "Spring Exhibition" in the Art Salon in Warsaw.
Creativity
He became famous primarily as a landscape painter . A distinctive facet of his talent was a romantic image of night landscapes at different times of the year and day. Popovsky's paintings were very popular in the art market and were in many private collections until the Second World War. During the life of the artist, a number of his paintings were selected for the collection of the Society for the Promotion of Fine Arts and the National Museum in Krakow .
In addition, Popovsky designed decorative objects and architecture. He was an expert in poetry, wrote reviews on art, publicistic articles.
He translated from French and Russian works of aestheticism and works on the history of art.
