Career

Yakupov as part of the Russian youth team at the 2012 World Cup

In the 2009/10 season, he played for the MHL Reactor team, which included 14 games, scored 6 (4 + 2) points and 26 minutes of a penalty. Nail missed the end of the season due to a hand injury, which also prevented him from helping the national team at the Junior World Championships in Minsk. He played for the junior team at the Challenge Cup in Canada, where he was the only player born in 1993. In four matches, the forward scored 2 goals and made 1 assists.

In the summer of 2010, Yakupov was defended at the KHL draft by the Nizhnekamsk Neftekhimik under number 19 [3] . Then he was drafted by the Ontario Junior League club “Sarnia Sting” under the general 2nd number in the draft of the Canadian Hockey League [4] . In the same year he went to play overseas.

In the NHL Draft, 2012 was selected under the first common number “ Edmonton Oilers ”, thus becoming the third Russian to be selected under the first common number in the NHL (after Kovalchuk and Ovechkin ). On July 23, 2012, he signed a three-year rookie contract with the Edmonton Oilers . Nail contributed a lot to the fact that Nail scored 170 points in 107 games in two seasons at the Sarnia Sting club of the Ontario Junior League.

At the time of the lockout in the NHL, he joined Neftekhimik acting in the KHL .

As part of the youth team of Russia, he participated in two world championships in 2012 and 2013 , at which he won silver and bronze medals. At MFM 2013 he was the captain of the national team.

He made his debut in the NHL on January 20, 2013 in a match against Vancouver Canucks . On January 22, he scored his first goal against San Jose Sharks .

In his first season, he became the best scorer among NHL beginners - 31 points (17 + 14) and the best sniper - 17 goals (6 of them in the majority, also the best result among beginners). Both of his goals scored were the best among Edmonton players. In addition, Nail was marked by the best percentage of implementation among all field players of his club - 21% of his shots reached the goal (81 shots / 17 goals). And in the final match of the season, Yakupov made a hat-trick against Vancouver Canucks . After the first successful season, Yakupov’s performance began to decline, and his utility rate in the seasons 2013-14 (-33) and 2014-15 (-35) became one of the worst in the league [5] .

On April 13, 2015, Yakupov signed a new two-year contract with Edmonton for a total of $ 5 million [6] .

On October 7, 2016, he was exchanged at St. Louis Blues for a young striker Zach Pochiro and a conditional choice in the 3rd round of the 2017 draft pick. [7] He played 40 matches for “musicians”, gaining 9 points, but did not play in the play-off off

At the end of the contract, St. Louis did not make a qualifying offer to Nail, and in the summer of 2017, the player signed a 1-year contract with Colorado Avalanche for $ 875 thousand.

Yakupov successfully started the 2017–18 season , gaining five points (3 + 2) in the first five games for Colorado [8] . But then the striker’s performance again fell, for the entire championship he scored only 16 points (9 + 7) and did not get into the composition in the playoff games. The club did not offer him a new contract and Nail decided to pursue a career in Russia. In July 2018, he signed a one-year contract with the SKA Continental Hockey League club [9] .

In general, for six seasons in the NHL, Yakupov spent 350 matches, this is the lowest indicator among league forwards selected in the draft under the first number for the entire period from 1963 to 2012 [10] .

Personal life

Nail Yakupov is Tatar by nationality, and Muslim by religion. [11] [12] [13] Nail’s father, Rail Yakupov, is a hockey coach and functionary. He was part of the coaching staff of Neftekhimik and was the sports director of Nefteyanik from Almetyevsk . [14] During his speech for the Edmonton Oilers, he lived with his parents and sister Alina in Canada. [15] Also, a Bichon Frize dog named Hadi lives at the hockey player’s house.
