The name of the genus comes from lat. tetra - "four", and lat. stygma - “stigma” (from the Greek. στίγμα - sign, mark, spot): by the presence of a 4-split or 4-lobed stigma . Plants are evergreen vines, reaching a length of 50 m or more. Leaves 3-, 5- or 7-lobed, large. The flowers are small, collected in multi-flowered false umbrellas; stigma 4-lobed, dissected.
