Biography

Born in St. Petersburg in a noble family, parents - Karl Antonovich and Anna Nikolaevna Walter. In 1922 he entered the Physics and Mathematics Department of the Petrograd (Leningrad) Polytechnic Institute . Since 1923 he was engaged in scientific activities under the leadership of I.V. Obreimov . Later he moved to the laboratory of N. N. Semenov , was engaged in research in the field of studying the configuration of electric fields. In 1925 he moved to the laboratory of Academician A.F. Ioffe , in which, together with KD Sinelnikov and I.V. Kurchatov, he studied the electrical and mechanical properties of dielectrics.

In 1930 he moved to Kharkov , where at that time the Ukrainian (later Kharkov) Physicotechnical Institute was created . Since 1937, he headed the newly created Department of Atomic Nuclear Physics (later the Department of Experimental Nuclear Physics) of Kharkov State University . From 1947 until his death, he worked and taught at the nuclear department (now the Faculty of Physics and Technology ) of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of KSU.

Since 1951, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR . In 1955 he was awarded the title Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Ukrainian SSR .

In 1965, he was introduced to the title of Hero of Socialist Labor , but in connection with his death he was never awarded.

In 1993 (posthumously) he was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology for the textbook Nuclear Physics.

Scientific activity

The works are devoted to the physics of dielectrics and semiconductors, high voltage technology, physics and vacuum technology, atomic nucleus physics, accelerator technology, high energy physics. He investigated the electrical and mechanical properties of dielectrics, the electrical and photoelectric properties of semiconductors. He developed the first physical theory of dielectric loss phenomena. In 1932, together with A. I. Leipunsky, K. D. Sinelnikov and G. D. Latyshev, for the first time in the USSR split the atomic nucleus by artificially accelerated protons. He supervised the construction of a number of electrostatic accelerators and a linear electron accelerator of 2 billion eV and the conduct of experiments on them in physics of the nucleus and elementary particles. Together with KD Sinelnikov, he developed and built (1938 - 41) the first in our country diffusion oil pumps
