Biography
Zvonimir Chervenko was born into a Czech family (the name of his great-grandfather was Chervenka) [1] in the city of Priepol , in the Yugoslav region of Sandzak , which is now part of Serbia .
Service at JNA
He began his military career at the Military Technical Academy in Zagreb , where after 19 years he became a teacher.
During the Croatian spring in the early 1970s , as a lieutenant colonel , Chervenko joined the Maspok activists. After the Tito government resorted to brutal countermeasures, he was sentenced to 18 months in prison with deprivation of title and right to retirement. Until 1990, Zvonimir worked as a collector at the RTV-Zagreb radio television studio.
Croatian War of Independence
At the beginning of the Croatian war , Croatian President Tudjman offered him the post of Minister of Defense, but Chervenko refused, saying: "I am a warrior, not a politician." He organized the defense of Zagreb , the blockade of the barracks of the Yugoslav People’s Army and began the process of forming 14 brigades in Zagreb.
In January 1992, Cervenko became commander of the Croatian militia, thus becoming deputy chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Croatia .
The peak of his military career, Chervenko reached just before the operation "The Tempest" , when he replaced the post of chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Croatia Janko Bobetko . Chervenko served as chief of the General Staff from July 15, 1995 to November 16, 1996 . During his command powers, the Croatian army carried out a successful operation - Operation Storm. President Tudjman fired him in November 1996 .
He was subsequently elected to the Croatian Parliament ’s Chamber of Appeal on the Croatian Democratic Commonwealth electoral list, and since 2000 he has become a member of the Clemency Commission.
Chervenko died on February 17, 2001 in Zagreb. With high honors, he was buried in the Alley of Croatian heroes of the Mirogoj cemetery.
