Biography
Vasily Balk was born on January 23, 1840, the son of Admiral Zakhar Zakharovich Balk , the manager of the Maritime Ministry, came from the nobility of the Vladimir province .
He was educated in the Page Corps , from which, on June 1, 1857, Her Majesty's Ulan Regiment (enrolled in the regiment on July 6) was assigned a cornet in the Life Guards , and on July 12, 1859, was promoted to lieutenant . On December 22, 1859, Balk was admitted to the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff , however, on November 5, 1860, for an unspecified reason, he was expelled from the academy and returned to the regiment. August 30, 1861 was promoted to headquarters captain .
In 1863, Vasily Zakharovich Balk participated in pacifying the uprising in the Vilna Military District . January 19, 1864 was promoted to captain.
August 30, 1869 promoted to colonel . On May 15, 1874 he commanded the 1st Lancers of the St. Petersburg Regiment , at the head of which he took part in the campaign of 1877-1878 against the Turks , was awarded two orders for military distinctions and a gold saber with the inscription "For Courage" .
On April 25, 1881, Balk was promoted to major general and appointed commander of the 1st Brigade of the 12th Cavalry Division .
Vasily Zakharovich Balk died on May 28, 1882 in the city of Rzhev from the effects of a blow inflicted by a horse [1] .
