Biography

He was born on January 22 ( February 4 ) in 1914 in the village of Gaychul, now the village of Novoukrainka, Bilmaksky district, Zaporozhye region of Ukraine . Russian . Member of the CPSU (b) since 1942. In 1921-1936 he lived and studied in an orphanage in the city of Berdyansk .

In the Red Army since 1936. Baranov graduated from the regimental school, received the rank of sergeant, remained on extra military service as a company officer. In the beginning of 1941, the foreman Baranov successfully passed the external examinations for the course of the military infantry school and was promoted to junior lieutenant .

Member of the Great Patriotic War since June 1941. He participated in the battles near Minsk , the village of Berezino , on the river Drut . In August 1941, he commanded a platoon in the first counterstroke of the Soviet troops under the town of Yelnya, Smolensk Region . The 100th Division, in which Baranov served, became the 1st Guards.

On the basis of this division in 1942, the 1st Guards Mechanized Corps was formed. VA Baranov was appointed commander of a motorized rifle company.

In December 1942, Baranov liberated the Rostov lands, the villages of Bokovskaya and Selivanovskaya. The 1st Guards Mechanized Corps of the South-Western Front sought to push as far as possible the external front of the encirclement from Stalingrad. In January 1943, the motorized infantry troops of Baranov fought for the city of Morozovsk, and on January 18 they went to the bank of the Kalitva river.

On February 14, 1943, the company of Baranov was one of the first to break into the city of Krasnodon.

In September 1943, Baranov participated in the liberation of the Donbass cities of Druzhkovka and Pavlograd . In 1944 he participated in the battles in the Right-Bank Ukraine, in Moldova and Romania.

During the fighting in Hungary, the guard captain Baranov commanded a motorized rifle battalion of the 1st Guards Mechanized Brigade. On March 28, 1945, in the battle for the city of Chorno, his battalion, acting in the forward detachment as a tank assault force, successfully crossed the River Rab , promptly rushed into the city and, together with other units, captured it.

Even more successful was the battalion of Baranov in the battle for the city of Sopron . Pursuing the retreating enemy, the motorized infantry inflicted heavy losses in manpower and equipment and entered the city. The soldiers of the battalion captured more than 600 soldiers and officers of the Wehrmacht, destroyed five tanks, 22 vehicles and a lot of enemy forces.

On April 2, 1944, the guard captain Baranov and his fighters were among the first to cross the Austrian border, captured the village of Hirm and captured an aircraft factory there.

April 13, 1945, Soviet troops captured the capital of Austria - Vienna . On April 17, 1945, in a heavy battle for the town of Zillingtal, guard Captain Baranov was mortally wounded.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated June 29, 1945, “for exemplary performance of the combat tasks of the command at the front of the struggle against the German invaders and the bravery and heroism shown by this”, guard Captain Baranov Vasily Andreyevich was posthumously awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
