The population is 33,840 people [1] ; 243 344 people live in the city and its agglomeration , which makes it the thirtieth most populated urban area of ββGreat Britain [2] .
Aldershot is known as the "House of the British Army " [3] ; his connection with the army allowed him to quickly grow from a small village into a city in the Victorian era . The Bruneval Barracks military barracks in Aldershot were reopened by Field Marshal Montgomery in 1965, although they were built in 1850 ; they were the first permanent military training base in the UK and Aldershot quickly and rightfully became the largest army base in the UK.
On February 22, 1972 , the city suffered a terrorist attack committed by the Irish Republican Army : 7 civilians, including a Catholic priest, died due to a car explosion; the explosion was later declared by the IRA as revenge for Bloody Sunday at Derry [4] .
