Raymond, a graduate of Tufts University and Stanford Business School, opened Victoria's Secret's first store at Stanford Shopping Center, embarrassed by the awkward attempt to buy underwear for his wife in an ordinary department store. To open a store, he took a bank loan of 40 thousand dollars and borrowed another 40 thousand from relatives. The company earned $ 500,000 in its first year. Raymond quickly began mailing through catalogs and opened three more stores [2] .

In 1982, after five years of work, Raymond sold Victoria's Secret with six stores and a 42-page catalog, generating $ 6 million a year, to Leslie Wexner, the creator of The Limited, for $ 4 million. [3] By the early 1990s, Victoria's Secret had become the largest US retailer of underwear worth $ 1 billion in assets. In fiscal 2009, Victoria's Secret was worth more than $ 5 billion.

In 1984, Raymond founded My Child's Destiny, a children's store that went bankrupt in 1986.

On August 26, 1993, Raymond committed suicide by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge [4] .
