Lee Munyeul ( cor. 이문열 ? , 李文烈? ; May 8, 1948 , Seoul ) is a classic of modern South Korean literature, whose work has been translated into several languages. According to the Korea Gallup polls, Korean number one writer (2004) [4] .

Biography
The writer's parents were on the police watch list because Lee Munyol’s father fled to North Korea for ideological reasons. [5] As a child, Lee often changed schools for financial and psychological reasons. [6]
He graduated from Seoul National University in 1970 (without a diploma). He made his debut in 1977 with the story “On the Border” published in the newspaper “Degu”. [5] [7] Created in 1985 in Incheon a creative studio for beginners. On its basis, in 1998, the country's first Pu-ak Literature Academy was opened. From 1994 to 1997, he taught Korean language and literature at Sejong University. Since 1999 - head of the literary academy "Pu-ak."
Since the early 1980s - one of the most popular prose writers. He was awarded the Kim Tong Thin Literary Prize (1982) for the novel “The Bird with Golden Wings”, the Republic of Korea Literary Prize (1983) for the novel “For the Emperor’s Sake,” the largest Ho-Am Prize (1999) and others.
He writes on a wide variety of topics - from military service to religious issues and traditional heroics for Korea. [7] Being one of the most controversial figures in the cultural field of Korea, he expresses support for the traditional values of Confucianism . [five]
Thanks to his arrangement of the classic Chinese novel Three Kingdoms , the book was included in the list of recent bestsellers . In total, 11 million copies of this ten-volume book were sold. [7] [8]
His prose has been translated into European languages. Several of his works filmed in South Korea.
