Patria konstantinupoleos

Patria Konstantinupoleos [1] ( Greek Pάτρια Κωνσταντινουπόλεως ), also known under the Latin name Scriptores originum Constantinopolitarum ("Writers on the Origin of Constantinople") - a collection of historical works on the history and monuments of the Byzantine capital Constantinople [2] , modern ( Istanbul ).

It was previously assumed that the author of the patria was the writer of the 14th century, Georgy Kodin , but, apparently, it was written around the year 995 under the reign of Vasily II the Bolgaroboytsy , and after that it was finalized under Alexei I Komnin [3]

Patria contains:

  • The work of the pagan writer of the VI century Hesychius of Miletus on the history of the city of Byzantium from its foundation to the time when Constantine I the Great renamed it to Constantinople [4] .
  • “Brief historical notes” ( Greek Παραστάσεις σύντομοι χρονικαί ), which focus mainly on ancient sculptures and monuments of the city
  • An untitled part dating from approximately 995 [2] .
  • The anonymous “History of the construction of Hagia Sophia”, written between the VI and X centuries, but more likely in the IX century [2] .
  • Topographic study dedicated to Alexei I Komnin [2] .

From an archaeological point of view, Patria is an invaluable source of information about the early history of Byzantium and various monuments of Constantinople. However, this work should be studied with great caution, since it often mixes facts with fiction and urban legends [2] . From a political point of view, Patria is interesting for its portrayal of emperors, mentions of which are practically absent and are largely limited by the role of the so-called “chronological indicators” [2] .
