The state military standard of Russia [2] defines armored combat wheeled / tracked vehicles as armored military wheeled / tracked vehicles equipped with weapons and intended for combat operations .
Depending on the classification, armored vehicles are divided into categories according to the size of the combat mass , type of engine, purpose, level of armor protection, type of airborne weapons and the like.
In the narrow sense, armored combat vehicles are armored land armored vehicles of BTVT , but excluding the so-called battle tanks and self-propelled guns . [one]

In international law, armored combat vehicles are considered self-propelled (wheeled or tracked, and for the purposes of the UN Register of Conventional Arms [3] also semi-tracked [4] ):
- with armor;
- having cross-country maneuverability;
- either designed and equipped for the transportation of an infantry unit of at least 4 people,
- either armed with (built-in or properly installed) weapons with a caliber of at least 20 mm (the CFE Treaty and the UN Register initially) or 12.5 mm [5] [1] ,
- either armed with an ATGM launcher (the CFE Treaty and the UN Register initially) or any other missiles except anti-aircraft [5] [1] .
As the Group of Governmental Experts on the UN Register of Conventional Arms in 2004 noted in its report , some light tanks fit into this category of register [6] .
