Biography
Joseph-Henri Leveye was born on May 28, 1796 in Cre-la-Ville (central France).
He studied medicine in Paris and received his medical degree in 1824 [2] .
Leveye was the first in his article Sur le hymenium des champignons in 1837 to provide a detailed description of basidia and cystid fungi and established the role of basidium in the formation of spores [2] . He also showed the importance of basidia for the proposed taxonomy and the distinction between ascomycetes and basidiomycetes [2] .
Joseph-Henri Leveye died on February 3, 1870 .
