After a year absence, the Russian team returned to the number of participants in the Grand Prix. Compared to the previous season, when she became a bronze medalist at the European Championships, the team has been updated by half. And if at the beginning of the rally the team did not always look convincing, then during the tournament the team significantly added to all components of the game. For the entire preliminary stage of the Grand Prix, Russian volleyball players lost only once and took second place.
The final tournament was held in Italy with the participation of 6 teams and consisted of a group round and playoffs. In their group, the Russian team completely lost to Brazil and outright defeated Japan, taking second place and reaching the semifinals. In the semifinals in a stubborn duel, the Italian team was defeated. Having lost the first two sets to the hostesses of the tournament, Russia won the next two, significantly increasing its advantage during the match. In the decisive fifth game, the Italians could no longer oppose Russian volleyball players.
In the final of the draw, the Brazilian national team beat the Russian national team, but this match was already fundamentally different from the first meeting of the same teams in the group stage and, above all, the quality of the game of the Russians. Thus, the Russian team became the silver medalist of the 2006 Grand Prix.

The 1st stage of the championship the Russian team went without losses, taking first place in their group. Especially important at this stage was the victory over the Olympic champions - Chinese volleyball players. It should be noted that during the championship the Russian team consistently increased its playing power and at the 2nd group stage of the rally strong teams from the Netherlands and the USA were fully convinced of this. Confident victories over these rivals brought the Russian team to the semi-finals of the tournament. And only in the little meaningful final match of the 2nd group round, the Russians lost to the Brazilian national team.
In the semifinals, Russian volleyball players did not leave any chances for the current world champion of the Italian national team and reached the final.
The decisive match of the championship between the teams of Russia and Brazil was the decoration of the competition. The high skill of the athletes, beating emotions over the edge, the famously twisted plot of the duel - all this kept volleyball players and spectators in tension for five sets. In the end of the decisive fifth game, the Brazilians achieved a seemingly decisive advantage by leading 13:11, but after that the South American women did not gain any more points. At a critical moment, the trump cards of the Russian team worked - a powerful serve and a block. Gamova’s replay after a successful blocking of the Brazilian attack, a strike into Sheila’s out, Akulova’s block and the same Gamova’s attack on the passing ball - 15:13 in the game and 3: 2 in the match. The Russian team from the fourth attempt wins the "gold" of the world championship.
