Biography
Ava Gardner was born in Smithfield, North Carolina , and was the youngest of seven children in a family of farmers Jonas and Mary Gardner. She began acting in films during the Second World War . The first tangible success came with the movie " Assassins " (1946) - a classic movie in the post-war noir genre. In the 1950s, Gardner began to promote under the motto "the sexiest animal on earth." Ava’s career peaked with leading roles in the films Kilimanjaro Snow with Gregory Peck (1952) and Mogambo with Clark Gable (1953), for which the actress was nominated for an Academy Award.
By the early 1960s, her career began to decline. The last major role was in the film " Iguana Night " (1964). Despite her obvious talent, Gardner never had a high opinion of her acting abilities. Mike Nichols and the graduate film producers wanted Gardner to play the role of Mrs. Robinson, but she refused. When the director said she was a great actress, Gardner replied: “You are very kind. I have no talent. They all tried, but all wasted ” [9] .
In 1976, she starred in the Soviet-American film Blue Bird .
Personal life
In addition to working in films, Ava Gardner has always been a favorite person in the columns of secular chronicles. Around her, rumors about non-traditional sexual orientation never calmed down. She was married three times - in 1941-1943 to the movie star Mickey Rooney , in 1945-1946 - to the swing king Artie Shaw and in 1951-1957 to the singer Frank Sinatra . In addition, her scandalous relationship with the millionaire Howard Hughes , who, according to the actress herself, forced her to marry and put her under surveillance, became widely known. In 1955, Ava moved to Spain .
Ava Gardner spent the last years of her life in London . In 1986, the actress suffered two strokes, which left her partially paralyzed and bedridden. Gardner's medical bills were paid by her ex-husband, Frank Sinatra . On January 25, 1990, the actress, aged 67, died of pneumonia. Her last words were: "I'm so tired ...". Gregory Peck , Gardner’s close friend and partner in the films Kilimanjaro ’s Snow (1952) and On the Shore (1959), took Morgan, the dog Gardner, and her housekeeper Carmen Vargas with him to Los Angeles .
