Biography
Magdalena Lee was born in Seoul in 1811 into an impoverished aristocratic family. Under the influence of her grandmother, as well as her mother Barbara Cho and her younger sister Maria Lee , she converted to Catholicism . When she was twenty years old, her unbelieving father wanted to marry Magdalen Lee to a non-Catholic. Magdalena Lee, citing a serious illness, escaped marriage.
Magdalena Lee was arrested in the summer of 1839 and tortured in order to get her to renounce Catholicism. Magdalena Lee was executed by decapitation in Seoul on December 29, 1839 along with Magdalena Khan , Peter Chwe , Elizabeth Chon , Barbara Ko , Barbara Cho and Benedict Hyun .
Magdalena Lee's mother later died in prison , and her younger sister Lee Ying Doc Maria was executed on January 31, 1840 .
Praise
Magdalena Lee was beatified on July 5, 1925 by Pope Pius XI and canonized on May 6, 1984 by Pope John Paul II along with a group of 103 Korean martyrs .
