Professor of World Religions, University of Southern California (1967–1997), former head of the department of religious studies at the Theological School of the University of Chicago [3] [4] .
Author of more than 30 books, including the popular textbook on religious studies "Many Peoples, Many Faiths", books on the history of religion ("The Fifties Spiritual Marketplace", "The Sixties Spiritual Awakening" and "Islands of Dawn"), as well as books , written from a theosophical point of view (“Finding the Quiet Mind”, “The Pilgrim Self”, “The Cross and the Grail”, “Finding Deep Joy”, “Frodo's Quest”) [3] [4] .
He is a member of the American Theosophical Society and the Priest of the Liberal Catholic Church [3] [4] .

Biography
Born in 1993 in Normal, Illinois [3] [4] .
He studied at the University of Colorado at Boulder , at the Berkeley Theological School at Yale University , at the Theological School of the University of Chicago , where in 1967 he received a Ph.D. in religious history [3] [4] .
Consisted of the US Episcopal Church , served as a chaplain in the US Navy [3] [4] .
In 1967-1997 he was a professor of world religions at the University of Southern California . Since 1997, Professor Emeritus , retired [4] .
He was head of the department of religious studies at the Theological School of the University of Chicago [3] .
Personal life
He lives in the small town of Ohai in Southern California. Since 1965, he has been married to Gracie Fei Elwood (Bauman), Master of Arts in Religion and the Arts from the Theological School of the University of Chicago, with whom he also met. He has two children: the son of Richard, who teaches at the Besant Hill School and daughter Fay, a graduate of the University of Claremont teaching English and Religious Studies at the International University of Hope [3] [4] .
