History
The city was founded in 1882 . After the Post Office rejected several names proposed by residents, the city, at the suggestion of settler Wilson Hewitt, was named Broken Bow (in English means “broken bow”), in honor of the bow found by Hewitt on an old Native American grave.
Initially, Broken Bow was a shopping center specializing in the sale of cattle, hay, and grain, supplied by surrounding farmers. By 1939, the city already had a cigar factory, two hotels and an airport.
