Activities

Harutyunova-Fidanyan is the author of four monographs and about 150 scientific articles. The works are devoted to historical cartography , economic and political history, the socio-administrative system of Byzantium . In studies, he studies the communities of Armenian Chalcedonites in the countries of the Byzantine cultural circle .

In many of her works, in particular at the 19th Copenhagen Congress and the round table of the 21st London Congress of Byzantine scholars, Harutyunova-Fidanyan suggested studying the “image of another” in the context of a dialogue of cultures, presenting the following problem areas:

  • the study of the mechanisms of appropriation and alienation, removal and endowment ("alien" to their own);
  • the study of the possibility of profound changes in mental and physical spaces under the influence of the “image of another”;
  • the study of the application of modern allological reactions of consciousness to the historical mentality that they are reconstructing.

In her works, she devoted a lot of time to the problems of Russian-Armenian relations, which resulted in the work: “Byzantine and Armenian historians about Russia and Rus”, “Cult of Gregory of Armenia in Novgorod”, “Orthodox Armenians in North-Eastern Russia”. Recently, Harutyunova-Fidanyan has been paying more attention to the mechanisms of interaction between oral and written traditions. For the monograph “The Story of Armenian Affairs” she was awarded a large gold medal from the Makaryev Foundation [2] .

She developed the concept of the Armenian Orthodox community of the VI - XI centuries and the theory of the existence of a new social model in the limitrophic regions of Byzantium, which she called the “contact zone”. Harutyunova-Fidanyan was introduced into scientific use the term “secondary epic” - a phenomenon that exists at the intersection of oral and written tradition [1] .

The author's works have been published in a number of academic publications in various countries. Harutyunova-Fidanyan takes an active part in international and regional conferences, congresses of Byzantine scholars and Orientalists, participates in authoritative international projects (together with scientists from Bulgaria , Germany , France , the USA ), in inter-institute projects and programs of the Institute of Solid State Physics and the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences [2] .
