Biography

Born in Freiburg . At 17, after 5 years as a bricklayer, Neufert entered the construction school (Baugewerbeschule) in Weimar . In 1919, the teacher recommended him to Walter Gropius as one of the first students of Bauhaus . He finished his studies in 1920. Together with the expressionist architect Paul Linder (1897–1968) set off on a year-long trip to Spain, where he sketched medieval churches. In Barcelona, he met Antoni Gaudi , whose architecture made a deep impression on the young student. Later, Neufert became one of the first defenders of Gaudi in Germany. After 1921, he returned to Bauhaus and became the chief architect under the leadership of Gropius in one of the most prominent architectural offices in the Weimar Republic .

In 1923, he met the artist Alice Spies-Neufert, a student of the Bauhaus masters Georg Mucha and Paul Klee , and married her in 1924. They had four children (Peter, Christa, Ingrid and Ilas).

In 1925, Neufert worked with Gropius on the implementation of the new Bauhaus building in Dessau and the completion of the master houses for Mukha , Klee and Kandinsky . In 1926 he returned to Weimar and began teaching under Otto Bartning At the Construction College (Bauhochschule), also called the “second Bauhaus”. Today it houses the headquarters of the Neufert Foundation and the small museum Neufert Box with interchangeable exposure. After the Construction College was closed by the Nazis, he moved to Berlin and worked in a private school founded by Johannes Itten , who was also forced to close in 1934.

He designed a private home for director Dr. Kindt (with stained glass from Charles Krudel ) and numerous residential buildings, administrative and industrial buildings in Weißwasser, Tschernitz and Kamenz. At the same time he worked on the book Building Design , which was published in 1936. She remains the daily assistant of architects and designers to this day.

In 1936, Neufert traveled to New York and Taliesin to get acquainted with the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and to assess his ability to find work in the United States. But, having arrived in New York, he discovered a huge interest in the first edition of his book and returned to Berlin to prepare the second edition. He decided to stay in Germany. In 1939, Albert Speer appointed Neufert to work on the standardization of German industrial architecture.

After World War II, Neuferth became a professor at the Darmstadt Technical University . He opened his architectural bureau Neufert und Neufert with his son Peter in 1953 and implemented a number of projects involving many industrial buildings.
